DR.
GOPAL KRISHAN SACHDEV moved on to meet the almighty
on 23rd December 2004 following an acute coronary event. An
event occurring in a man who did not allow almost any of the
so called "risk factors" around him, thus defying
all currently available medical logic for which DR GOPAL worked
all his life. And that event costing a priceless life because
although DR GOPAL could gather five doctors, including an
eminent anesthesiologist and physician, around him in the
last few minutes at his disposal; he could not summon The
Destiny on his side!
DR. GOPAL KRISHAN SACHDEV, MBBS, MD,
DM (Gastroenterology), MRCP, was a brilliant student
of MAULANA AZAD MEDICAL COLLEGE. Born on 11th September 1954,
he joined the college as an undergraduate student in 1972
to pass out in 1976. After completing his post-graduation
and post-doctoral courses from MAMC & GB PANT Hospitals
and MRCP from the UK, he again joined MAMC as an Assistant
Professor of Medicine in October 1987. He was promoted as
Associate Professor in February 1990 and became Professor
of Medicine in March 1995. DR GOPAL was a very affectionate
and loving member of the faculty of MAMC & Associated
Hospitals.
DR. GOPAL KRISHAN SACHDEV was a great teacher, academician
and scientist. He published a large number of papers in national
and international journals, presented his work in many national/international
conferences, and participated in many teaching/research related
activities of various governmental and non-governmental organizations.
He attended the Commonwealth Fellowship in the UK in 1990-91.
DR. GOPAL was a very competent and kind hearted clinician
who had a vast patient following. Never the one to lose his
composure, he was always available for his patients with a
smile, irrespective of their status or stature. He had a lot
more to offer to his patients, colleagues, specialty, friends,
family and the whole society than he could in his short life.
DR. GOPAL was one of greatest sources of inspiration for his
MAMC batch mates to get together as a unit and to keep meeting
every year since 1992. He had an unending pool of energy for
initiating his batch mates to get together. Adhering to this
strategy right up to his last breath, he ensured that four
of the five doctors who attended to him in his final few minutes
and those who became instrumental in transferring his vision
to two other humans were from his "Batch-mate-Family';
and more than a hundred of this Family got together during
his ceremonies - 'Praanpriye yadi shraadh
karo meraa to aise karnaa, peeney waalon ko bulwaa kar khulwaa
denaa madhushaalaa!"
DR. GOPAL was a man of multiple talents. In addition to being
a "moving encyclopedia" of almost anything related
to the field of medicine, he was a top-order photographer
and a superb cook. While he could stitch better than most
ladies, he could type and work on the computers better than
many professional computer operators! Although a very cautious
eater, he could discuss in detail the best foods, drinks,
and eating joints around the world. Extremely fond of excursions,
he could lecture on the roads, railways, air-travel, cities,
building materials, artifacts and monuments of India and the
whole world!
DR. GOPAL'S sad and untimely demise is a great loss for the
medical students, his colleagues, his patients, his family
and friends, and indeed the whole humanity. In the history
of MAMC and all those institutions that he served around the
world during his life, DR GOPAL will be remembered as an affectionate
and distinguished teacher, friend and human being.
DR. GOPAL is survived by his mother Shrimati Tulsibai Sachdev,
wife Dr Rajni, two brilliant daughters Rishibha and Sushruti,
and the families of his two brothers and three sisters. These
brave people, along with the other members of his family,
took the courageous and very humane decision to donate DR
GOPAL'S eyes even in their hour of intense grief. This way
they ensured that his trait of helping others continued even
after his soul left to meet the Super-soul, the Paramaatmaa.
DR. GOPAL will be missed in the days to come but his memories
will continue to be a source of inspiration for all those
who came in his magical contact. Let us all pray to the Almighty
to rest his soul in peace and give courage to his family to
bear this irreparable loss.
The world will never be the same without you, GOPAL.
