What is forensic medicine?
Ans. Forensic medicine is the application of medical
knowledge for the purpose of law and administration of justice.

What are the department's main activities?
Ans. Its main activities are conducting medicolegal
work. It is basically medical work which has got a bearing
on law and administration of justice.
Q:3.
How many undergraduate students do you have?
Ans. We have 180 undergraduate students every year,
who come to use after spending one year in the basic sciences
departments such as anatomy and physiology. They remain
with us for one and a half years, and during this period
they are trained in all medicolegal matters which they are
likely to face in their professional life.
Q:4.
How may postgraduate students do you have at present?
Ans. We have four postgraduate students studying
for their M.D. in Forensic Medicine. Each year there is
provision for two additional M.D. students.
Q:5.
I have completed my MBBS and am now looking for further
avenues. Will it be a good idea to join M.D. in Forensic
Medicine?
Ans. Yes, because currently our country is lacking
man power in medicolegal field. In this department, students
are exposed to best training in forensic medicine, matching
the world's best. After getting M.D. training from this
department, you are likely to be absorbed as Assistant Professor
of Forensic Medicine in one of the several medical colleges
around the country. Till now the department has trained
about 50 postgraduate students, all of whom are now well-established
in their professional life and contributing to the medicolegal
services of this country. Several of the Postgraduate students
from this department are now Heads of Departments in their
own medical colleges and some have even settled abroad.

Can we consult the department directly for a medicolegal
problem? Is there a fees for such work?
Ans. The department does not hold private work for
the general public. The proper route for the general public
would be to lodge formal complaints with the official agencies
such as Police etc, which will then refer the cases to us.
We do not take any fees for such work.
Q:7.
I want to become a forensic medicine specialist. What should
I do?
Ans. You can not become a forensic medicine specialist
directly. You must get admission in an MBBS course, and
after completing that course, you can go in for a post graduation
(MD) in forensic medicine. The duration of this course is
3 years, during which you would also be required to write
a thesis related to forensic medicine or allied topics.

Does the department conduct joint research ventures? I want
to conduct a joint research venture with your department.
Ans. Yes, we do conduct joint research venture. Contact
the Head of the Department with your research project, and
we will see how we can proceed.
